COAL RESOURCES: HARNESSING A VALUABLE INDIGENOUS NATURAL RESOURCE
Sarawak is endowed with valuable indigenous natural resources including Malaysia’s largest coal reserves at 1.5 billion tonnes of potential coal resources (Source: Minerals and Geoscience Department).
Together with its partners, Sarawak Energy’s upstream subsidiary Sarawak Energy Resources Sdn Bhd conducts activities in exploration, development and extraction of these indigenous coal resources to supply Sarawak Energy’s modern, low-emission coal-fired power plants in Balingian, Mukah and Sejingkat.
The 100% locally-mined low sulphur coal together with gas from offshore Sarawak provide the basis for a balanced generation mix and security of supply.
As owner and developer rather than a mere buyer of coal, Sarawak Energy is implementing improved mining practices and mine planning techniques to optimise coal recovery and ensure long term sustainable coal resource development for Sarawak’s power generation.
The company is also able to enhance the management and reliability of coal supply for its power plants through its involvement in the entire coal value chain:
- Conducting coal exploration and mine feasibility studies to find and develop new coal resources to meet Sarawak Energy’s immediate and long term coal requirements.
- As a prominent player in Sarawak’s coal-mining industry, securing long term reliable and sustainable supply of coal for domestic power generation at a stable and competitive price
- Enhancing the technical, operational and safety standards and efficiency of the exploration, mining and delivery of coal.
Sarawak Energy places strong emphasis on supporting local community development with maximisation of local content a priority. Mining activities have created direct and indirect employment and business opportunities that the local community can potentially tap into, especially with the implementation of corporate social responsibility programmes that develops capacity for the resident population and fence line communities.
