In a joint effort to combat electricity theft, Sarawak Energy, through its operations and retail arm Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), together with the police, recently uncovered another case of power theft linked to cryptocurrency mining at an unoccupied double-storey intermediate house in Desa Senadin.

Investigations revealed that direct tapping cables were used to bypass the electricity meter, powering 12 cryptocurrency mining servers. In addition, exhaust fans were discovered directly connected to the servers in an attempt to escape detection as cryptocurrency servers run continuously, consuming a lot of electricity and emitting intense heat. The illegal setup caused an estimated financial loss of RM9,000 per month.

The illegal connections were disconnected by SESCO in collaboration with the police. Authorities are now conducting further investigation to identify the individuals responsible, including the property’s tenants.

SESCO emphasises that electricity theft poses significant safety risks, such as fire hazards and electrocution. These activities can also disrupt power supply to neighbouring areas, causing widespread inconvenience.

Offenders convicted under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance face fines of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment for up to five years.

Property owners are advised to ensure their tenants comply with electricity regulations and to conduct regular monitoring of their premises as landlords may also be held liable for illegal activities on their properties. SESCO remains resolute in addressing power theft, with skilled inspection teams capable of uncovering even the most concealed illegal installations. The company also collaborates closely with enforcement agencies and the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

The public is urged to report any suspicious activities related to electricity theft. Reports can be made anonymously by contacting SESCO’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or emailing customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All reports will be kept strictly confidential.
