Sarawak Energy Strengthens Greening Initiative Through Joint Tree Planting Programme

KUCHING
11 OCTOBER 2024

Sarawak Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) Sarawak, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Sarawak Electronics and Supporting Industries Companies Association (SECA), planted 650 trees at TEGAS Digital Village on 11 October as part of its commitment to environmental stewardship. A total of 600 Mussaenda and 50 Bucida trees were planted around the Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone.

This event is part of Sarawak Energy’s 10-year Integrated Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign, which aims to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030. The initiative also aligns with the company’s goal to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal No. 13 (Climate Action) and Goal No. 15 (Life on Land).

About 400 participants from collaborating agencies joined the event, which was officiated by The Honourable Datuk Dr. Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Deputy Minister for MINTRED. Also present were Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS); Lo Sheau Sia, Deputy Permanent Secretary for MINTRED, and Maureen Labarge, Chairman of the SECA Human Resources Committee. Sarawak Energy was represented by Ir. Pramod Kumar Karunakaran, Executive Vice President for Project Delivery.

While the Greening Sarawak Campaign has already surpassed its goal of planting 35 million trees ahead of the 2025 target, Sarawak Energy is continuing to support the national Greening Malaysia Programme, which aims to plant 100 million trees by 2025. As of 30 September 2024, Sarawak Energy has planted 153,284 trees under its own campaign, which contributes to the national initiative.

In his remarks, Ir. Pramod emphasised the importance of collaboration in achieving shared objectives, noting that this event marks the first partnership between Sarawak Energy, MINTRED, MBKS and SECA beyond regular project activities.

He said, “By partnering with various agencies, authorities and the community, this initiative strengthens our commitment to sustainability and climate action while supporting holistic ecosystem rehabilitation efforts, thereby contributing to the greening of our cities."

The tree-planting event reflects Sarawak Energy’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with stakeholders in driving environmental conservation and contributing to long-term sustainability initiatives in the region.
