Sarawak Energy, through its subsidiaries SEB Power Sdn Bhd and Syarikat SESCO Bhd, was recognised with five awards at the Asian Power Awards 2024 at the Conrad Centennial Singapore on 22 October.
The recognition highlights Sarawak Energy’s ongoing efforts in delivering innovative, sustainable energy solutions and advancing its digitalisation agenda in Malaysia’s power generation sector.
The awards received were Power Utility of the Year – Malaysia; Innovative Power Technology of the Year – Malaysia; Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Malaysia; Smart Grid Project of the Year – Malaysia; and Hydro Power Project of the Year – Bronze.
Leading the Sarawak Energy delegation at the awards ceremony was its Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili, who was accompanied by Lau Kim Swee, CEO for SESCO; Nurfaizal Bin Wahi; Station Manager for Murum Hydroelectric Plant (HEP); Lee Yau Kei, Senior Manager for Operational Excellence, SEB Power; Selamat Wong, Senior Manager for Asset Management, SESCO; Daniel Bin Sahari, Station Manager for Mukah Power Generation; and Raymond Ling Seng Kiat, Station Manager for Balingian Power Generation.
Commenting on the awards, Sharbini reaffirmed the Company’s vision of achieving sustainable growth and prosperity for the region by meeting the demand for reliable and renewable energy.
“These recognitions we have received reflect our commitment to becoming a regional renewable energy powerhouse and sustainable digital utility, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future,” said Sharbini.
Sarawak Energy’s transformation aligns with the Sarawak Post-COVID Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), focusing on sustainable hydropower development, leveraging digitalisation, and embracing innovation.
The Group’s modernisation and digitalisation efforts are key to becoming a top quartile sustainable digital utility by 2025. Through the digitalisation of its power plants and the Smart Grid initiative, Sarawak Energy has improved efficiency, reduced costs, and increased reliability. This progress is further bolstered by the Remote Monitoring and Diagnostics (RMAD) Centre, which uses real-time analytics to optimise power plant performance – reinforcing its operational excellence commitment.
In addition, Sarawak Energy remains committed to harnessing its abundant hydropower resources, which contribute over 60% of the electricity generated in Sarawak. The 944MW Murum HEP is a key driver of Sarawak’s renewable energy development, enabling the trading of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) on the Bursa Carbon Exchange since June 2024. These RECs help corporations meet their sustainability goals through renewable energy procurement, further supporting the PCDS 2030’s steer for a low-carbon economy.
In line with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, Sarawak Energy is committed to minimising the impact of its operations and maximising the benefits to the communities it serves.
The 20th Asian Power Awards recognises innovative projects in the energy sector, honouring companies addressing the climate crisis and growing energy demands. The awards celebrate excellence in innovation and sustainability, providing a platform for industry leaders to network and exchange insights.
Sarawak Energy’s industry peer, PT PLN Indonesia Power has also received honours across four categories: Wind Power Project of the Year-Indonesia, Environmental Upgrade of the Year-Indonesia, Biomass Power Project of the Year-Bronze, and Green Hydrogen Power Project of the Year-Silver. Meanwhile, PETRONAS bagged two wins at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2024, receiving titles in the Digital Transformation Initiative of the Year-Malaysia and ESG Initiative of the Year-Malaysia categories.
Sharbini acknowledges Sarawak Energy employees and partners for their continued efforts in innovating digitalisation to enhance energy efficiency towards building a sustainable energy future for all.
