Sarawak Energy Recognised For Sustainability Leadership At UNGCMYB Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2024

Sarawak Energy’s commitment to sustainability was recognised at the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2024 held last week. The Company received several accolades for its efforts in embedding sustainable and ethical principles into its business practices.

The awards are organised annually by UNGCMYB to inspire businesses to take credible, ambitious actions towards achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Sarawak Energy received two awards in the large company category: ‘Climate Action (Non-Financial Institution)’ and ‘Finance and Investment’. The accolades recognise the company’s commitment to fulfilling its “Business Ambition for 1.5°Celsius” pledge in 2020 to achieve net-zero emissions economy by 2050. From 2010 to 2022, the company has achieved a 73% reduction in carbon emissions intensity. The awards also acknowledge Sarawak Energy’s efforts in integrating financial and ESG metrics into its capital management framework, promoting investment transparency and responsible long-term value creation.

In addition, Sarawak Energy was recognised with the Partnership for the Goals, Pioneer Sustainable Development Action, Sustainability Awareness and Employee Engagement, SBTi Validators Recognition, and ESG START Engagement accolades.

Commenting on the awards, Group CEO Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili said, “Sarawak Energy’s vision since 2012 is to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for Sarawak by meeting the region's need for reliable and renewable energy, forming the foundation of our sustainability journey. Our focus on renewable energy and in particular hydropower development as well as our business and corporate initiatives are fully aligned with the Sarawak Government’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.”

The awards ceremony also featured a special certificate presentation for Sarawak Energy’s first cohort of 19 graduates from the Certified Sustainability Manager Programme. Developed based on identified competencies in the UNGCMYB-Bursa Corporate Sustainability Practitioner Competency Framework and co-certified by UNGCMYB and Monash University Malaysia (MUM), the programme ensures  participants are equipped with the essential skills for success in the field of sustainability management to help meet their organisation's sustainability performance objectives.

Sustainability Managers under the programme are assessed by UNGCMYB and MUM, and required to complete the Bursa Competency Self-Assessment.

Recipients went onstage to receive their certificates from Faroze Nadar, Executive Director of UNGCMYB; Prof Stephen Boyle, Vice President, Education of MUM; and Dr Nafis Alam, Head of School of Business, MUM. The handover was witnessed by Sarawak Energy’s Datuk Haji Sharbini; Lau Kim Swee, CEO for Sarawak Energy’s subsidiary SESCO; Tan Kok Kiong, Chief Financial Officer; and Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Senior Vice President for Corporate Services.
