Sarawak Energy is taking comprehensive measures to ensure reliable electricity supply for the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA XXI) 2024, scheduled from 17 to 24 August, deploying additional resources across the games venues stepping up as part of its commitment to the Government of Sarawak to help ensure a successful event.

“As a gold sponsor, Sarawak Energy is fully committed to supporting Sarawak as it hosts the Games for the third time. Our role is to ensure a reliable supply of electricity, which is essential for an event of this scale,” said Lau Kim Swee, Chief Executive Officer of Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), the utility arm of Sarawak Energy.

This year’s SUKMA will span nine divisions—Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri—and will feature 488 events across 37 sports, making uninterrupted power supply crucial to the success of the event.

Under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, Sarawak Energy is providing technical support and deploying mobile generators at key venues.

“We have taken all possible precautions to prevent disruptions at the venues. Our technical support teams will be on standby 24/7, ready to address any issues including quick restoration if there is a supply interruption,” Lau continued.

“We are deploying about 100 technical staff across all venues, ensuring immediate response to any potential issues. Our team is prepared to handle any power supply situation to ensure the success of SUKMA XXI,” Lau added.

Sarawak Energy is also focusing on preventative measures, including the maintenance and inspection of power lines and cables at each venue to ensure the infrastructure can meet the demands of the event. Additionally, generator sets will be installed at key competition venues across the state to provide reliable backup support.

SUKMA XXI will see 12,619 participants, including 9,927 athletes and 2,692 officials, descending upon Sarawak across diverse sports such as aquatics, athletics, weightlifting, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, and others.

Following SUKMA XXI, the Para Malaysia Games (Para SUKMA) 2024 will be held in Kuching from 22 to 28 September, featuring 10 sports and 334 events. With approximately 2,470 athletes expected to compete, Sarawak Energy is equally committed to ensuring a reliable power supply for these events.

Sarawak Energy remains focused on delivering reliable electricity supply for SUKMA XXI and future events across Sarawak, reinforcing the company’s role in the region’s development and commitment to service excellence.
