Sarawak Energy Honours Retired Employees at Annual Retirees’ Dinner
369 Retirees Contribute 12,941 Years of Service to the Company
Sarawak Energy celebrated the dedication and service of 369 retirees at its 2024 Retirees Dinner on 18 October. The annual event offers an opportunity to honour the significant contributions of retired employees to the company’s success while also allowing them to reconnect with one another.
Speaking at the event, Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili expressed the company’s appreciation for the retirees' dedication, emphasising their critical role in shaping Sarawak Energy's journey over the past century.
“Much of our success is due to the hard work of both past and present employees. Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our people – we have made great strides in electrifying Sarawak and transforming our energy landscape. From expanding rural electrification to pioneering innovations, each achievement reflects their invaluable contributions,” said Sharbini.
He said that collectively, these retirees contributed an impressive 12,941 years of service – an average of 35 years each – providing the foundation for Sarawak Energy’s continued growth and guiding the current employees towards excellence.
Sharbini added that the retirees’ legacy continues to inspire the company’s 6,000-strong workforce, largely comprised of Sarawakians. This enduring legacy showcases the talent and resilience that drives the company toward its aspiration of becoming a regional renewable energy powerhouse, with a focus on sustainable growth.
Sarawak Energy's transformation from its humble beginnings in 1921 as an Electrical Section within the Public Works Department under the Brooke Administration to its current position as a vertically integrated power utility and Malaysia's largest renewable energy developer, is a result of the dedication and hard work of its people.
This commitment has helped Sarawak Energy achieve numerous accolades, including multiple awards from HR Asia’s Best Companies to Work for in Asia and the Brandon Hall Human Capital Management Awards.
Acknowledging the retirees’ continued value, Sharbini hoped that their wealth of experience and knowledge would continue to benefit the next generation of Sarawak Energy employees.
"Our current workforce has greatly benefitted from the example set by those who came before them. Your commitment and shared knowledge have helped shape the talented, multidisciplinary team we have today," he said.
Sharbini also thanked the retirees’ loved ones for their support throughout the years, emphasising that their backing had been crucial to the retirees' success at Sarawak Energy.
Adding to the evening's atmosphere, the entertainment was provided by Sarawak Energy's own retirees: the D’Catz City Band and Elvis tribute artist, ‘Elvince’.
The Sarawak Energy Retirees Dinner is an annual event that reflects the company’s commitment to its workforce and the importance of maintaining close ties with its retired employees. Beyond recognising their contributions, the event serves to continue nurturing a sense of community among Sarawak Energy’s team members.
