Sarawak Energy’s commitment to occupational safety and health earned the company multiple accolades at the 42nd Malaysian Society of Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) Awards Ceremony, held in Petaling Jaya on 11 November.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili, received ‘The President’s Award’ in recognition of his leadership in driving occupational safety and health excellence across the organisation. The award was presented by MSOSH President Ahmad Fakhrul Anuar Ismail and witnessed by Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia.

The inaugural award recognises Sharbini's role in transforming Sarawak Energy's Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) culture since his appointment as Group CEO in 2016. His leadership has created a safer and more conducive work environment through a more intense focus on health and safety, including making safety-first a priority and HSE as a Key Focus Area Group-wide, contributing to a lower accident and injury rate and enhanced employee wellbeing and operational efficiency.

Since 2017, HSSE has been a top priority and shared responsibility in Sarawak Energy irrespective of one’s roles and responsibilities. Through the embedment of HSSE excellence culture, Sarawak Energy believes it will reach across every level of the organisation to excellence in other aspects such as technical, operational, project delivery, commercial and talent management as well.

In addition to Sharbini’s recognition, Ir. Pramod Kumar Karunakaran, Sarawak Energy’s Executive Vice President for Project Delivery, received a Special Leadership Award in Occupational Safety and Health Excellence. The award recognises leaders who demonstrate exemplary dedication to elevating safety standards and fostering a culture of well-being within the organisation.

Sarawak Energy also received 22 awards for safety and health standards across its generation, transmission, and distribution facilities, comprising seven Gold Merit Awards, ten Gold Class I Awards, four Gold Class II Awards, and one Silver Award.

Bakun Hydro Power Generation Sdn Bhd and Murum Hydroelectric Power Generation Sdn Bhd, the operators of the Bakun and Murum Hydroelectric Plants (HEP) respectively, received the Gold Merit Award, one of the ceremony’s top honours.

Other Sarawak Energy’s subsidiaries and facilities receiving the Gold Merit Award included Balingian Power Generation Sdn Bhd, Balingian Energy Minerals Sdn Bhd, and Miri Power Station. Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), Sarawak Energy’s operational and retail arm, was also awarded the Gold Merit Award for its Kuching and Sibu Regional Offices.

Batang Ai Power Generation Sdn Bhd, the operator of the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant, received the Gold Class I Award, along with Sejingkat Power Corporation Sdn Bhd, Mukah Power Generation Sdn Bhd, Sungai Biawak Power Station, Bintulu Power Station, Limbang Power Station, Lawas Power Station, as well as SESCO’s Bintulu and Miri Regional Office.

Sarawak Energy’s Bintulu B 132kV Transmission Substation Project, along with SESCO’s Kuching Central Store Complex and its Sri Aman, Sarikei, and Limbang Offices, received the Gold Class II Award. Additionally, SESCO’s Lawas Network Office earned a Silver Award.

Commenting on Sarawak Energy’s achievements, Sharbini said: “These awards are a testament to our commitment to making safety a core operational priority. At Sarawak Energy, our focus is on ensuring that everybody goes home safely at the end of each day. We will continue to enhance our safety practices and uphold the highest standards, building a safe working environment across all areas of our operations.”

Sarawak Energy’s commitment to HSSE is integral to its operations. The company follows a strict Environment, Occupational Safety, and Health (EOSH) policy to safeguard the well-being of its employees, contractors, and the communities it serves. Initiatives like the Life-Saving Rules are designed to prevent workplace incidents and support the organisation’s goal of zero Lost Time Injury and zero fatalities.

MSOSH, a non-profit organisation, is focused on promoting workplace safety and health standards across Malaysia. Through resources, training, and certification, MSOSH supports companies in achieving and maintaining best practices in occupational safety.

Since 1982, MSOSH has organised the annual MSOSH Occupational Safety and Health Awards, recognising organisations in Malaysia for outstanding OSH performance. Companies are rigorously evaluated through document reviews and on-site audits by qualified MSOSH auditors, with awards granted to those demonstrating consistent, proactive, and effective safety practices.
