Sarawak Energy has expanded its corporate fleet with the addition of eight new electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support Sarawak’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.

The handover ceremony was held at Menara Sarawak Energy on 13 September 2024, marking another milestone in the company's initiative to electrify its fleet.

“The addition of new EVs reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable practices into our operations as we continue our journey to 'green the grid and electrify the fleet.' It helps reduce our carbon footprint while also laying the groundwork for broader EV adoption across Sarawak," said Sarawak Energy’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili.

The addition of these EVs aligns with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which promotes electric mobility to reduce the state’s carbon footprint. It also supports Malaysia’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030, which encourages wider adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.

Sarawak Energy began its fleet electrification journey in 2015 with the acquisition of four Nissan Leaf EVs, becoming one of the first organisations in Sarawak to embrace electric mobility. The company later expanded its green fleet by introducing electric scooters, and in 2019, further advanced its efforts by adding two hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hyundai Nexo SUVs into its EV lineup. This addition made Sarawak the first region in Southeast Asia to have hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road.

Currently, Sarawak Energy is working closely with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) to develop a comprehensive EV charging network across the state to support this transition.

In collaboration with Gentari, the company launched an EV fast-charging station at ICOM Square in Kuching during the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum 3.0 (SAREF 3.0) in September 2023. This station, equipped with 180kW DC fast chargers, is the fastest public charging station in Borneo, further supporting efforts to make Sarawak EV-ready.
