Sarawak Energy Celebrates Excellence in Health, Safety, and Environmental Stewardship at The HSE Excellence Award 2023
KUCHING
15 JULY 2024
Sarawak Energy paid tribute to the commitment and achievements of its contractors in health, safety and environmental (HSE) management at the annual Sarawak Energy HSE Excellence Award 2023.
The event featured the Contractor Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Compliance Award or CECA and Contractor Transformation Programme (CTP), highlighting the key contributions of contractors who uphold Sarawak Energy’s core value that “everybody goes home safely”.
Sarawak Energy’s Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili officiated at the event, accompanied by Senior Vice President for Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE), Marconi Madai, and other senior management members.
In his speech, Sharbini praised the contractors for their dedication to meeting government-mandated HSE standards and expressed gratitude to partner organisations for their support in Sarawak Energy’s HSE initiatives.
“Congratulations to those who repeated their success and demonstrated remarkable improvement in their performance this time around. However, it is important to remember that tonight’s event does not signify the conclusion of your HSSE journey; rather, it marks a new beginning.”
Sharbini highlighted Sarawak Energy’s comprehensive approach to enhance the capabilities of its HSE officers, including competency development, continuous training, coaching, forums, and awareness programmes.
“We maintain regular stakeholder engagements, particularly with project-affected communities, to ensure transparency and open communication. We are committed to continuous monitoring and improvement of HSE performance at our sites, as well as self-regulation to comply with internal and regulatory requirements,” he added.
Sharbini emphasised the need for continuous improvement and vigilance, urging contractors to explore new ways to upgrade their HSE management capabilities.
The 2023 awards saw significant progress in HSE performance across projects under the CECA and CTP assessments, with enhanced ratings reflecting the contractors’ commitment to compliance and improvement. Contractors were evaluated jointly by Sarawak Energy’s assessors and guided by experts from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the Department of Environment (DOE) Sarawak, and the Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH).
Sarawak Energy introduced the CECA and CTP in 2017 to promote a culture of self-regulation in HSE compliance among its contractors while implementing the energy developers’ projects and operations.
During his speech at the event, Marconi highlighted the importance of assessment standards for both awards, stating, “These standards are crucial in uplifting our contractors’ contributions to fostering a culture of excellence in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) practices. They encourage self-regulation to comply with relevant HSE laws and requirements while advancing Sarawak Energy’s projects and operations.”
He reiterated Sarawak Energy’s commitment to collaboration with contractors to ensure compliance with statutory HSE requirements throughout project lifecycles.
The awards ceremony was attended by Jack Liam, Controller of Environmental Quality, NREB Sarawak; John Rampai, Director of DOE Sarawak, and Jamadi Yusup, Director of DOSH Sarawak.
The 2023 HSE Excellence Awards recognised seven projects under CECA and 32 contractors for CTP. CECA 2023 saw two (2) contractors awarded gold, four (4) silver, and one (1) certificate of participation for successfully fulfilling the assessment criteria. While for CTP 2023, eight (8) contractors were awarded gold, fifteen (15) silver, five (5) bronze, and four (4) certificates of participation.
