Murum HEP Renewable Energy Certificates

Sarawak Energy is committed to the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility.
Sarawak Energy first introduced Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in 2019, enabling corporate purchases of renewable energy primarily generated from sustainable hydropower in Sarawak. Since the introduction of RECs from the Batang Ai HEP issued by the Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGR) registry five years ago, the response has been positive, supporting more corporates in their sustainability ambitions. Since 2022, Sarawak Energy has diversified its REC portfolio to include the registration of the Murum HEP under the I-REC registry.
The Murum HEP REC is regulated, validated and certified by I-REC, ensuring transparency and accountability for trading of RECs. The I-REC registry is an online platform designed for transparent, secure, and reliable tracking of RECs. Established to implement best practice guidelines and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) standards for REC tracking and reporting, it ensures the integrity of each REC transaction to provide assurance to buyers. I-REC is a globally recognised registry that offers credible and trusted means of REC issuance and tracking, well-established in Southeast Asian countries.
RECs are recognised instruments to promote renewable energy generation and facilitate the transition to cleaner energy sources. They enable entities in regions with limited access to renewables to support renewable projects elsewhere, fostering a broader transition towards sustainable energy sources.
RECs represent the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour of renewable energy generated and play a vital role in enabling organisations to meet renewable energy targets and reduce their carbon footprint, even in regions where direct procurement of renewable energy may be challenging. The assertion regarding market boundaries and the effectiveness of RECs aligns with discussions outlined in the GHG Protocol, which defines the scope and boundaries for emission accounting.
