Multiple Cable Faults Disrupt Power Supply In Roban And Saratok
SARATOK
30 AUGUST 2024
Two separate cable faults on 24 August 2024 led to power outages across multiple areas in Roban and Saratok. These outages also caused a power loss at a SACOFA telecommunications tower servicing the location, disrupting mobile and internet services in the surrounding areas.
Excavation work is suspected to have caused the first cable fault incident which disrupted power supply to Kwong Ming Road, Selalang, Sebangkoi and Roban at 11.44am.
Upon notification, Sarawak Energy’s operations arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), immediately dispatched its technical team. Power was restored to Saratok and Roban by 2.05pm, and to the remaining areas, including critical telecommunications infrastructure, by 3.43pm the same day. However, adverse weather conditions delayed fault location efforts at Sebangkoi Hill, with repairs successfully completed by 5.15am on 26 August.
The second fault incident on 24 August which involved a lightning arrester was reported at 8.21pm, when a customer in Roban observed low voltage and sparking in the Sg Paoh area and immediately informed SESCO. SESCO’s technical team went to site and quickly identified the issue, which had affected power supply to Saratok, Roban and Kabong. An emergency shutdown was conducted at 10.40pm to facilitate repairs, and power was fully restored a few hours later at around 12.34am.
Sarawak Energy’s General Manager for Rural Electrification, Nazry Hj. Abdul Latip thanked the affected customers for their patience and support during the disruptions.
“We recognise the inconvenience caused by these outages and appreciate the public’s understanding as our teams worked to restore power as quickly and safely as possible under challenging conditions,” he said.
Sarawak Energy remains committed to enhancing the reliability and efficiency of its power system through continuous investments in modern technology, backup supplies, and infrastructure. Additionally, its technical teams are on high alert and standby 24 hours a day, ready to respond immediately to both localised and major outages.
