Cryptocurrency Mining Operation in Jalan Aman, Sibu, Found Stealing Electricity
SIBU
4 DECEMBER 2024
Sarawak Energy’s operational and retail arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) has uncovered another case of electricity theft in Sibu, linked to cryptocurrency mining operations. During a routine inspection at a shophouse in Jalan Aman, SESCO’s meter inspection team found 32 cryptocurrency mining rigs and direct tapping cables hidden behind signboards, used to bypass electricity meters.
The theft was uncovered after SESCO’s technical crew noticed unusual electricity usage patterns. Further checks at the site confirmed that direct tapping cables were being used to steal electricity. The theft caused an estimated monthly loss of over RM20,000 in unbilled electricity consumption.
Preliminary investigations have linked the electricity theft to the tenant of the premises, who is suspected of running the cryptocurrency mining operation. Authorities are also investigating whether the landlord was aware of the activities or failed to properly vet the tenant. Both parties are being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which carries penalties of up to RM200,000 in fines or/and up to five years imprisonment upon conviction.
Cases like these cause more than just financial losses. Illegal direct tapping cables not only violates SESCO’s safety standards but also creates serious safety risks, including fire hazards, electrocution, and potential power outages that can affect surrounding homes and businesses. These dangers highlight the severe consequences of tampering with power systems.
Landlords are urged to thoroughly screen their tenants and ensure their properties are not used for illegal purposes to avoid potential legal consequences stemming from their tenants’ actions.
