KUCHING

30 MAY 2023

Sarawak Energy today recognised sixteen vendors for their outstanding performance and excellence in contract delivery at the Sarawak Energy Vendor Awards 2023 (SEVA 2023) event held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.

The SEVA recipients were evaluated for their 2022 performance in health, security, safety & environmental excellence (HSSE), quality of works, delivery of services and integrity in the categories of ‘Best Works’; ‘Best Supplier’; ‘Best Service Provider’, ‘Best Local Consultant’, ‘Best International Consultant’, as well as ‘Best Bumiputera Vendor’ and ‘Promising Bumiputera Vendor’.

Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg officiated the event, with Sarawak Energy Board member and Chairman of the Bumiputera Participation Board Committee, The Honourable Dato Haji Idris Buang and Sarawak Energy Group CEO, Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili leading the hosting party.

Abang Zohari thanked Sarawak Energy for the vital initiative as part of their ongoing efforts to promote a sustainable and competitive business environment within Sarawak and applauded Sarawak Energy for empowering local vendors to participate in the renewable energy sector.

He said, “I am pleased to see the continued trend of increased local content participation in Sarawak Energy projects over the past year, allowing the local vendors opportunities to contribute to Post Covid Development Strategy’ ambitious renewable energy targets which includes; maintaining at least 60% renewable energy capacity mix by 2030, reducing CO2 emission by 600k tons per annum via the electrification of Sarawak mobility fleet by 2030 and achieving 15% income from foreign market to position Sarawak as Southeast Asia’s renewable energy powerhouse.”

“To ensure that strong vendor engagement with the renewable energy industry continues, the Sarawak Government is fully committed to supporting public-private collaborations across the renewable energy value chain. This aligns with the priorities outlined in the Malaysian Budget 2023, which also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships under the first pillar of inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” he added.

The Premier also expressed his appreciation to the Bumiputera Participation Board Committee or BPBC, led by Dato Haji Idris, as well as the various Bumiputera Chambers of Business for the various initiatives and framework to help Bumiputera vendors engage in procurement activities in Sarawak Energy as well as other organisations within the State.

Speaking at the event, Dato Haji Idris said, “Since its inception in 2020, SEVA has become one of our most significant procurement transformation initiatives. Besides recognising and rewarding our top-performing vendors, the programme also strengthens the Group’s vendor performance management mechanisms and fosters closer ties with vendors.”

He highlighted that the SEVA programme has enjoyed a significant improvement in vendor ratings this year, with over 85% of Sarawak Energy’s vendors being awarded A and B ratings – a 6% increase over last year.

“In 2022, we engaged nearly 650 vendors, including Sarawakian, other Malaysian, and international vendors – with significant expenditure in works, goods consultancy, and services. The total number of Sarawakian vendors for 2022 was 510, comprising 80% of the 641 vendors for the year. 240 or 37% of the 641 vendors are Sarawakian Bumiputeras.

He also emphasised that Sarawak Energy provides competency-building initiatives and opportunities for Sarawak’s businesses to equip its vendors with strong technical capabilities to ensure that the potential of the partnerships between the vendor and Sarawak Energy is maximised.

Sarawak Energy had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CENTEXS to provide knowledge and skills and with CIDB for training resources. The Group also collaborates with ministries and business chambers for contractors training and development funding, besides partnering with four financial institutions in vendor financing programmes.

This is in line with Sarawak Energy’s effort to facilitate greater success and progress for its vendors in Sarawak’s vibrant business community.

Idris continued, “Digitalisation and sustainability are key success factors in today’s global business environment that we must account for and capitalise on them if we are to sustain the growth that we have enjoyed over the past decade.”

“Reflecting this need, we have streamlined our vendor performance evaluation process by integrating the SEVA programme to our Sarawak Energy e-Procurement or SEPRO application. By digitalising procurement processes in this way, we aim to cultivate a digital mindset among our vendors, ensuring that they are not left behind in an increasingly digital business environment.”

Sarawak Energy has introduced a mobile application, providing vendors with greater flexibility in managing procurement activities at their fingertips. Furthermore, the company will continue to host Vendor Registration Workshops across Sarawak in collaboration with Unit Pendaftaran Kontraktor dan Juruperunding (UPKJ) and CIDB. These workshops aim to assist local Sarawakian vendors in registering with SEPRO, UPKJ, and CIDB.

At the event, the recipients for ‘Best Works’ award categories were Redco Sdn Bhd, Shorefield Sdn Bhd, Mark Maritime Sdn Bhd and Mega Electrical Services Sdn Bhd.

Metro Glide Sdn Bhd and Sonic Well Sdn Bhd received ‘Best Bumiputera Vendor’ award while Syarikat Tajau Tepus Enterprise received ‘Promising Bumiputera Vendor’ award.
