Sarawak Energy Receives Working Visit By Deputy Minister For Energy And Environmental Sustainability

Sarawak Energy recently welcomed Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, The Honourable Dr. Haji Hazland bin Abang Hipni and a delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty) for a working visit at Menara Sarawak Energy.

The delegates accompanying the Deputy Minister were the Permanent Secretary for MEESty, Abang Ahmad Abang Morni; Deputy Permanent Secretary, Rusmaliza Mat Saad; and Head of Energy Unit, Ikmal Hisham bin Maharom.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer, Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili presented a corporate overview of Sarawak Energy’s efforts in modernising the state’s power system, sustainable digital utility initiatives and the Group’s commitment to responsible and sustainable energy development in fulfilling its vision of providing renewable, reliable and affordable energy to Sarawak and beyond.

Sarawak Energy offers the lowest average tariffs in Malaysia and amongst the lowest in Southeast Asia, as well amongst the greenest electricity through its predominantly renewable hydropower generation mix.

Sharbini emphasised the Group’s aspiration to become a regional renewable energy powerhouse and a benchmark utility while capturing growth through continuous improvement, and the state’s journey towards a decarbonised power system through renewable hydropower, advancing Sarawak’s Green Energy Agenda.

Sharbini also shared that Sarawak has achieved 99.2% overall domestic electricity coverage and 97.9% rural electricity coverage through a mixture of electrification initiatives under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication.

This is a very significant improvement from 56% rural electricity coverage in 2009.

As part of its commitment to sustainable development, the Group is also working with stakeholders on a 10-Year Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign, to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030 in alignment with the Greening Sarawak Campaign.

Sharbini shared that Sarawak Energy’s flagship event for 2023; Sustainable and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 3.0), will be held from 6 to 7 September at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). SAREF 3.0 aims to drive local discourse on sustainability and will further highlight the role of renewable energy in delivering the UN SDGs by 2030.

The working visit concluded with a presentation of an EV charger to Dr. Hazland.
