Sarawak Energy Awards 214 Scholarships for 2022

Sarawak Energy has awarded scholarships to 201 students from throughout Sarawak and 13 employees to continue their education in public and private universities in Malaysia as well as overseas under various fields of study for 2022.

Of the 214 scholarship recipients, 5 will be pursuing their studies overseas in Singapore, Australia and the United Kingdom

The external scholars were selected from over 688 applications this year, after undergoing a rigorous and structured assessment process. The applicants were shortlisted based on their academic and extra-curricular achievements and leadership potential.

The scholarship awards ceremony was held at the Waterfront Hotel Kuching and was attended by scholars, parents, school principals, university vice-chancellors and Sarawak Energy’s senior management team.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer, Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili officiated at the event and congratulated the scholarship beneficiaries.

“On behalf of Sarawak Energy, I take great pride that we have helped to shape and brighten the futures of many young Sarawakian over the past 52 years, especially since we relaunched this programme in 2014. By investing in young minds, we can help bright young people from every part of Sarawak to reach their full potential and become meaningful contributors to society,” he said.

“Sarawak Energy’s scholarship programme provides Sarawak’s youth with financial support to pursue their tertiary education and ensures that it is equitably distributed by applying a diversity lens. Our team works towards ensuring young people with high potential who may be disadvantaged due to lack of access to amenities as a result of rural backgrounds are also eligible for our scholarships to maintain equitability,” he explained.

Sharbini also emphasised the importance in investing in Sarawak Energy’s people, which is in line with its organisational focus on continuous improvement and talent management.

The Scholarship Awards programme is part of Sarawak Energy’s ongoing efforts to support Sarawak talent reach their potential through an annual educational commitment of RM16 million. Since it was first introduced in 2014, the Scholarship programme has benefitted 895 scholars including 123 staff, while 55 internal scholars and 226 external scholars are still pursuing their studies. As of this year, a total of RM34.9 million has been invested into the programme since 2017.

Besides the scholarship programme, Sarawak Energy’s other initiatives to identify, attract and recruit the best young talents include the Bursary programme under the Early Bird Talent Scheme.

A total of RM100,000 is allocated annually to support Sarawak secondary students who excel academically and in extra-curricular activities through financial aids managed by their schools. The Bursary programme was introduced in 2019 and has since financially supported 436 secondary students from selected high-performing schools throughout Sarawak.
