Sarawak Energy and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Sama Jaya Nature Reserve, formalising a partnership for the planting and protection of trees and conduct other biodiversity related research projects across Sarawak Energy’s assets, facilities, locations and project areas in Sarawak.

The signing ceremony was held in conjunction with the official launch of the Sarawak Energy 10-Year Integrated Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg officiated the launching of the campaign, under which Sarawak Energy is working with various partners on tree planting and habitat restoration programmes to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030.

The company targets 50,000 trees in 2022 and will also be enriching its hydropower catchment areas by planting more trees while protecting existing species and associated ecological services.

This is part of the company’s commitment to pursue excellence in environmental sustainability and contribute to the climate action effort through nature-based solutions. The campaign also supports Sarawak’s commitment towards the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) No. 13 ‘Climate Change’ and No. 15 ‘Life on Land’ as well as the COP 26 Goal to ‘Adapt to Protect Communities and Natural Habitats’.

Sarawak Energy was the first corporate body in Malaysia to commit to the Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ pledge under the United Nations Global Compact Network. Sarawak Energy also supports the San Jose Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower.

The campaign supports Sarawak’s goal to plant 35 million trees by 2025 under the Greening Malaysia programme and achieve 1 million hectares (ha) of Totally Protected Areas (TPA) in Sarawak.

As of 30 May 2022, a total of 33,162,534 trees have been planted nationwide, with Sarawak topping the list with 12,247,202 trees.

Joining them were the Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, Deputy Ministers for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang (Telecommunication) and Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Haji Junaidi (Utility), Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datu Haji Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister for Energy & Environment Sustainability, Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni, as well as staff of Sarawak Energy and SFC.

Chairman of Sarawak Energy Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Bin Haji Sepawi; Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili and Sarawak Forestry Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Haji Zolkipli Mohamad Aton were also present.

They were joined by Sarawak Energy’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, Hajah Siti Aisah Binti Adenan; Senior Vice President for Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE), Marconi Madai; Sarawak Forestry Corporation’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer I, Oswald Braken Tisen and Deputy Chief Executive Officer II, Abang Arabi Bin Abang Aimran, who were also witnesses for the MOU.

In his congratulatory remarks during the event, the Premier said, “I am delighted that two key agencies are working together on this very important initiative that will not just benefit Sarawak and Malaysia but also contribute to the global climate action effort, helping to protect the environment for future generations.”

He added, “This is an important partnership for the UN Sustainable Development Goals or UN SDGs – we all recognise that no single entity, agency, individual or even government can realise the global ambition for sustainable and universal prosperity without working together.”

In his speech, Abdul Hamed thanked the Sarawak Government and other key agencies for the key roles they had played in supporting and implementing excellence environmental initiatives.

He remarked, “Building on previous environmental initiatives, this tree planting programme reaffirms our commitment to sustainability and climate action as Sarawak’s primary provider of renewable energy as it augments existing initiatives and programmes within the Company, ensuring responsible energy development”.

“This will contribute to the targeted 50,000 trees we aim to plant and protect at our power plants, projects, totally protected areas and urban centers through collaborations with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Forest Department Sarawak, Department of Environment, Natural Resources Environment Board and local councils as well as staff volunteerism by fourth quarter of this year”.

In his speech, Len Talif said, “Sarawak Forestry Corporation started the planting of native trees at 7 totally protected areas or TPAs in Sarawak since June 2020. Our main objective is to restore 8000 ha of degraded parts of Sarawak’s TPAs within 10 years back to its ecological and functional level.”
