UN GCMYB Awards Sarawak Energy Major 2021 Sustainability Performance Awards

Sarawak Energy’s ongoing efforts in embedding sustainable practices into its business and operations were recognised at the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UN GCMYB) 2021 Sustainability Performance Awards last night.
Group Chief Executive Officer Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili was recognised with the Sustainability Icon Award 2021 while Sarawak Energy was a winner for SDG Ambition Benchmark 7: Science-based Emission Reduction in line with a 1.5°C Pathway under the Corporate category. Head for Sustainability Mohamad Irwan Aman also received recognition as a Climate Action Fellow Award.
The award recognises companies’ overall efforts in incorporating sustainability into their business strategies as well as distinguished corporate leaders for driving the sustainability agenda in their organisations.
This year’s award recipients included Bursa Malaysia, Eco World Development Group, Vinda Malaysia, Ditrolic Energy Holding, Tata Consultancy Services Malaysia, Smith and Nephew Operation, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad, edotco Group and Duopharma Biotech.
Commenting on the awards, Sharbini said “It is truly an honour for Sarawak Energy to be recognised for our efforts in the sustainability arena. Our sustainability journey began decades ago and to be recognised by the UN GCMYB for our efforts to integrate sustainability in our decision making as well as how we manage and operate our business is tremendous, especially as we celebrate our 100th year of powering Sarawak this year.”
“The road to sustainable growth and prosperity requires a commitment to continuous improvement across all our business operations and performance benchmarking with the industry’s best. This award recognises the support and effort of our 5,400 strong workforce as we work towards building a sustainable energy future for all,” he added.
Sarawak Energy’s Executive Vice President for Project Delivery, Pramod Kumar Karunakaran and other members of the senior management team were also present at the event.
A milestone in its sustainability commitment, Sarawak Energy is the first company in Malaysia to sign the pledge for “Business Ambition for 1.5°Celsius” under the United Nations Global Compact. By signing the pledge, Sarawak Energy commits to setting a science-based emission reduction target across relevant scopes, in line with the Paris Agreement to pursue efforts to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2030.
