Sarawak Energy Opens Second Worksite Childcare Centre in Bakun

BAKUN
4 MARCH 2020

In line with its ambition to be the employer of choice in Sarawak, Sarawak Energy is committed to providing opportunities for its staff to reach their full potential. This includes tailoring suitable development programmes for individual employees and preparing a conducive working environment.

As part of this, the energy developer and power utility has set up a second Little Power Genius worksite childcare centre for the convenience of its staff with young children working at the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant, Belaga District. This initiative is to ease the burden of staff having to source for childcare assistance while they are at work.

Its first Little Power Genius childcare centre opened in March last year at Menara Sarawak Energy, Kuching.

The Little Power Genius in Bakun was officially opened today by the Minister for Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah in a ceremony held at the power plant.

Also present were Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili; James Ung, Chief Executive Officer of SEB Power; Siti Aisah Adenan, Senior Vice President for Corporate Services; Polycarp Wong, Vice President of Hydro together with the senior management and staff of Sarawak Energy.

Sharbini said in his speech that Sarawak Energy shall continue to promote diversity and inclusiveness among its workforce.

“Little Power Genius represents one of our efforts to provide our talent with the right kind of support system and a conducive work environment that enables them to stay, participate and benefit from our development programmes. Little Power Genius is a tremendous addition to our existing employee benefits and hope that this will also attract younger talents to join us, especially to serve at rural operation sites such as Bakun,” Sharbini said.

A significant portion of Sarawak Energy’s workforce consists of young working adults who are establishing families.

The centre began operating in February and currently accommodates 15 children including infants. Both Little Power Genius centres are operated by Taska Si Comel Cerdik, a national level childcare provider.

Apart from providing childcare service, the establishment of the Little Power Genius is also to provide employment opportunity for the locals in Bakun as the operator is also looking at engaging and training them as childcare givers for the centre.
