Man Apprehended for Substation Break-in

KUCHING
23 March 2020

Three men tried to break into a 33kV substation off Jalan Sungai Maong Ulu on 19 March. One was apprehended by Sarawak Energy’s Corporate Security Response Team while the other two managed to escape.

In the 12.20am incident, Sarawak Energy’s security team went to the substation following a public tip-off that three men were seen breaking into the facility.

When the security team arrived, they saw the three men dismantling cables and managed to apprehend one of them while two others managed to escape. The man was later handed over to the Police for further investigation.

After the arrest, Police found 15 meters of 95-mm armoured-core cables and 10 meters Protection Control and Instrumentation (PCI) cables on the ground and switchyard. They also found hardware tools and a syringe from the man.

Cable theft is an offence and is extremely dangerous as it can cause serious injuries and even death from electrocution.

The energy developer and power utility strongly advises everyone to stay home during this time.
