Kanowit 132/33KV Substation to Reinforce Power Suppy Reliability in Central Sarawak
TOWARDS FULL ELECTRIFICATION BY 2025

Sarawak Energy’s 132kV/33kV substation in Kanowit will reinforce power supply reliability in central Sarawak once connected to the transmission grid network.
The substation will further link to Julau and Ngugun medium voltage substations via double-circuit transmission lines, providing thousands more homes and business centres in the area with reliable, renewable and affordable electricity. The substation is expected to be ready for partial operation in December 2020 and fully operational by March 2021.
A Projek Rakyat under the Sarawak Government, construction of Kanowit Substation began in May 2019. It is part of the Accelerated Rural Electrification Masterplan under the Ministry of Utilities being implemented by Sarawak Energy. The RM2.37billion Masterplan aims to provide electricity to 97% of Sarawak’s rural areas by 2020 towards full electrification by 2025.
On 11 January 2020, the official launch of Projek Utiliti Sarawak was held at the project site of the Kanowit 132/33kV Substation drawing a crowd of more than a thousand people from the surrounding towns and villages.
Officiated by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, the event also saw Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Minister for Utilities Sarawak, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom in attendance.
Also present were Assistant Minister for Rural Electricity, Datuk Liwan Lagang; Assistant Minister for Water Supply, Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi and members of the State Legislative Assembly.
Permanent Secretary to Ministry of Utilities, Dato Ir Alice Jawan Empaling and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Energy Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili also joined the event.
