Greater Commitment Shown By Sarawak Energy Contractors Towards Environmental Compliance
KUCHING, 8 MARCH 2019, FRIDAY: The Sarawak Energy Contractor Environmental Impact Assessment or EIA Compliance Awards 2018 has recorded an increase in participation as well as the number of contractors recognised for high environmental compliance levels.
The 2019 awards presentation saw three gold award recipients and six silver awards recipients for their environmental management practices and commitment over the 2018 adjudication period. In 2017, there were no gold awards recipients and only one silver award recipient.
Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datu Sharbini Suhaili commended the remarkable improvement and congratulated all the award recipients.
“As the State’s primary energy company, we are responsible for meeting the energy needs of Sarawak’s present and future generations. In doing so, we strive to achieve a balance in meeting development needs with environmental protection,” said Sharbini at the awards presentation ceremony.
“We aim to minimise negative impact and maximise the positive outcomes in our business and operations as well as our projects. As part of this, we want to ensure that our contractors are making environmental compliance and self-regulation as part of their work culture,” he said.
“We must place adequate mitigation measures and call for the full commitment of our contractors to comply with state and national environmental legislation as well as the international standards that apply to us,” Sharbini said.
He also called on Sarawak Energy’s contractors to work closely with the corporation on raising environmental compliance levels while working on developing power projects.
Sarawak Energy introduced the awards in 2017 to raise awareness amongst contractors on the shared duty to care for the environment. The awards aim to recognise and acknowledge contractors with high levels of compliance to EIA approval conditions and statutory environmental requirements in carrying out Sarawak Energy’s projects.
