Testing Of Murum HEP On Track For Full Commissioning By Q2 2015
KUCHING, 1st DECEMBER 2014, MONDAY: Sarawak Energy is on track in the development of Murum HEP with the testing of its first unit of power generating turbine in progress.
According to Sarawak Energy’s Vice President of Hydro, Mr. Polycarp HF Wong, “The first unit is ready to be handed over to us by the contractor, Three Gorges Development Company (M) Sdn Bhd and the other three sets are being tested in stages for full commissioning by 2nd quarter of next year.”
“At the moment, we are doing a series of reliability tests, including test on the spillway at work.
“Murum HEP is unique as it has the tallest stepped chute spillway in the world and is innovative in its design. As such, the study is of interest to many, including dam designers, contractors and engineers.
“As part of the process, the team has taken precautionary steps in anticipation of the spilling by doing a wash-down cleaning to remove any debris on the spillway and demobilised all works downstream of the dam. Within this testing period, we will be vigilant and enhance our safety precautions.
“We are excited about the progress of Murum HEP and and look forward to the handing over of the first unit from the contractor to us soon,” added Polycarp.
Murum dam is the second hydroelectric project built by Sarawak Energy after Batang Ai HEP which was commissioned in 1985.
The main dam is a roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam with a maximum height above the foundation of 141m. The dam has a crest elevation of 546m above sea level. Impoundment of the reservoir started on September 21, 2013 and has reached its supply level.
