Service providers recognised for good work in project implementation

SIBU, MARCH 2, 2018, Friday: To encourage environmental self-regulation in project implementation, Sarawak Energy has introduced the Contractor Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Compliance Award 2017.

Held at a leading hotel in Sibu last night, the inaugural awards ceremony was organized to recognize and differentiate efforts by contractors and consultants that met a high level of compliance with EIA assessment requirements and standards as well as conditions of approval, enforced at Federal and State level, in undertaking projects awarded by Sarawak Energy.

“We have a strong commitment to sustainable development in how we implement our projects as well as in how we manage our business. We aim to be good corporate stewards of the environment and are committed to not only comply with environmental legislation and requirements that provide the basis for the protection of the environment but also to mitigate the impact of our activities on the environment,” said Sharbini Suhaili, Sarawak Energy’s Group Chief Executive Officer during his speech at the event. Also present at the event were Aisah Eden, Sarawak Energy Executive Vice President for Corporate Services and Marconi Madai, Group Vice President for Health Safety, Security and Environment.

“The Sarawak Energy Contractor EIA Compliance Awards were introduced to promote and encourage commitment to environmental care in our contractor community. We hope that by serving as a platform to recognise and acknowledge the efforts of our contractors in environmental management, and in ensuring compliance with EIA conditions of approval and statutory requirements and standards, the awards will inculcate and embed good environmental practice,” Sharbini added.

At the ceremony, 14 contractors were presented with silver and bronze awards while seven consultants were given certificates for their efforts in observing EIA standards.   Sarawak Energy worked closely with Department of Environment (DOE) and Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) in monitoring EIA compliance and performance by its contractors and consultants.

Recipients were also rated on their performance in complying with requirements and standards within the parameter of EIA management compliance, in line with Sarawak Energy effort as a developer of renewable and green energy.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) are mandatory comprehensive studies to evaluate potential impacts of projects with the reports made available to the public before implementation.

Sarawak Energy is planning to organise the awards annually.
