Sarawak Energy At SIBEC 2018: Affordable, Sustainable And Reliable Energy To Power Sarawak's Economic Growth

KUCHING, 12 OCTOBER 2018, FRIDAY: Sarawak Energy pursues balanced energy development by harnessing its indigenous natural resources to benefit Sarawak and will explore alternative energy as part of its generation mix. It is also adapting to become a digital utility in step with global trends.

Speaking to an audience of around 600 delegates comprising key industry players and service providers at the inaugural Sarawak International Business Exhibition and Conference (SIBEC), James Ung (翁新光), Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Energy's generation arm SEB Power spoke about how the organisation had achieved a balanced energy generation mix for a secure energy future for Sarawak and beyond.

“Our generation mix is predominantly hydropower and we are also maintaining our thermal plants in order to ensure security of supply. By doing so, we have built capacity to help spur and grow economic growth for Sarawak. We are also researching generation and applications of other energy sources," he said.

Ung also explained how pursuing hydropower had secured the state several advantages.

“Our venture into hydropower has enabled us to provide the lowest average unsubsidised tariffs in Malaysia. We also export electricity to West Kalimantan, displacing the equivalent in diesel generation for our neighbour and marking a significant milestone towards realising the Borneo Grid,” said Ung.

Sarawak Energy objectives are closely aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including providing greater access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy system and reduce carbon emission intensity to mitigate climate change.

SIBEC 2018 is organised by the Sarawak Business Federation and is supported and endorsed by the Sarawak State Government with the objectives to promote business and investment, to support the transformation of Sarawak’s digital economy, and to showcase the promotion of Digital Technology in Sarawak. The 2-day event was officiated by Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg earlier today.
