Inaugural Sarawak Energy Junior Badminton Championship a New Platform to Develop Badminton Talent

KUCHING, 21 AUGUST 2018, TUESDAY: The inaugural Sarawak Energy Junior Badminton Championship saw 300 badminton players from throughout the state convene in Kuching to test their skills against some of the best young shuttlers in Sarawak.  

Held at Sentosa Sports Centre, from 18 August, the competition attracted aspiring young shuttlers, aged up to 19 years old with the youngest a six years old.  

The tournament was open to all Sarawakians, permanent residents and those with work and study permits in Sarawak. The tournament was divided into categories of Boys Singles, Girls Singles, Boys Doubles and Girls Doubles for Under 12, Under 15 and Under 19 age groups.  

Played on single knock-out system with each player permitted to participate in one tie per match and matches played on a 21 points 3-game system, the inaugural event was aimed at nurturing interest and developing potential young talent in badminton. 

In the Boy’s Singles Under 12, the champion was Aryan Syahimad Le from SJK (C) Chun Hua No.6 and Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim from SK RPR Jalan Astana was first runner up. Both Leong Ming Kai from SJK (C) Chung Hua No.4 and Muhammad Ikhwanul Hakim Harman from SBA were second runners up. 

In the Girl’s Singles Under 12, the champion was Levia Kho En Qi (SJK (C) Chung Hua No.4) with Sharon Vong Shan Shan (SJK (C) Chung Hua No.5) as first runner up. Both Nurin Izzah Qistina Norman (PBBS/ABIM) and Ashreney Kho Jia Min (CCY) were second runners up. 

The pair of Chung Jia Ho (SJK (C) Chung Hua No. 4) and Aryan Syahimad Lee was the champion in the Boys’ Doubles Under 12 after they defeated the pair of Muhammad Ikhwanul Hakim Harman and Leong Ming Kai who settled for first runners up.  The second runners up in the same category were pairs of Dexter Lim Jun Lik (SK Green Road) and Chin Kang Neng (SJK (C) Chung Hua No. 2) and Chrysolius Patricain Jega (SJK (C) Chung Hua No. 2) and Edrick O’Neil (KBA).  

In the Girls’ Doubles Under 12, the champion was Levia who partnered Angel Lim En Yu (SJK (C) Chung Hua No. 3) while Amni Umairah Ahmad Rabbani (PBBS/ABIM) and Nurin Izzah Qistina Norman were first runners up. The second runners up were the pairs of Sharon Vong Shan Shan and Sally Vong Xuan Xuan (SJK (C) Chung Hua No.5) and the pairs Arya Faridah Hamizan and Amerie Chua An Yen (both from Tunku Putra School) 

In the Boy’s Singles Under 15, the champion was Pui Wee Young (SMK Arang Road) and Joshua Voon (SMK Gapor) was first runner up while both Felix Fong Jia Liang (SBA) and Jeremy Juan (SMK Batu Lintang) were runners up. 

In the Girl’s Singles Under 15, the champion was Lee Zi Suen (SMK Green Road) and first runner up was Brenda Lai (Chung Middle School No.3) while Nicole Hon Cai Xuan (St Joseph Private School) and Audrey Vannesa Chee were second runners up. 

In the Boys Doubles Under 15, the champion was the pair of Joshua Voon (SMK Gapor) and Pui Wee Young (SMK Arang Road) while the first runner up was the pair of Benedict Chan Sheng An and Anderson Yeo Soon Kai (both SBA). The pairs of Felix Fong and Clement Jong (both SBA) and Brendan Goh (Tunku Putra School) and Morgan Poh (Chung Middle School No.3) were second runners up. 

Nicole Hon partnering Kashley Kho Tze Yin (SBA) were the champion in the Girls’ Doubles Under 15 while the pair of Audrey Vanessa Chee and Brenda Lai (Chung Hua Middle School No.3) were the first runner up.  The second runners up were the pair of Krin Sophia Ng and Voon Ya Suen (both SBA) and Siti Nursuhaiza Suhaimi (SMK Green Road) and Owen Ting Shih Wee (PBM). 

In the Boy’s Singles Under 19, the champion was Danny Lee (SMK Sungai Tapang) while Barrie Chong Kwong Wei (SBA) was the first runner up. Both Toh Wei Thin (Chung Hua Middle School No.1) and Jordan Lee Chen Yuen (SMK Sacred Heart) were second runners up. 

In the Girl’s Singles Under 19, Flora Fong Xin Jie (SBA) was the champion while Kashley Kho Tze Yin (SBA) was the first runner up. The second runners up were Shu Anne J Yong (Politeknik Kuching) and Felicia Fong Xin Hui (SBA). 

Both Syafiq Azhar Haizain (SMK Green Road) and Owen Ting Shih Wee (PBM) were the Boys’ Doubles Under 19 champion after they defeated Nik Azizi Murad and Barrie Chong Kwang Wei (both SBA). Both Nik Azizi and Barrie were the first runner up. The second runners up were Goh Shun Khiat and Chen Zi Quan ( both SBA) and Irsyad Iskandar Sukiman who partnered Ronald Lai Jing Yuan (both SBA). 

In the Girls’ Doubles Under 19, the champion was the pair of Kam Wei Li and Kristy Tay Yong. Felicia Yong Xin Hui and Flora Fong Xin Jie (both SBA) were the first runner up and the pairs of Angel Sim Jih Qin (SMK St Teresa) and Francesca Moh Ching Yong (Chung Hua Middle School No. 1) and Gladys Tan Ru Qian (Swinburne) who partnered Irene sia (SMK Kai Dee) were the second runners up. 

Sarawak Energy aims to power young badminton talent through the competition by providing an additional avenue to groom young shuttlers to compete at future local, regional and international level.  

Prizes worth more than RM7,000 were up for grabs and Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Sharbini Suhaili gave away the prizes to the winners.
