WIEF delegates hear of Sarawak Energy’s renewable hydro energy as the driver for Sarawak’s socio-economy transformation

KUCHING, November 25, 2017, Saturday: Sarawak Energy showcased the transformation of Sarawak through a balanced development strategy focusing on renewable, affordable hydropower at the 13th World Islamic Economic Forum – one of the most prestigious international forums of its kind.

Group Chief Executive Officer Sharbini Suhaili shared the story with an audience of local and foreign delegates at one of the conference’s Sarawak Focus session.

“Since we moved towards renewable hydropower to drive investment and growth, we have increased generation capacity of this renewable resource up to 75% today, decreased our grid carbon intensity by over 70% and lowered electricity tariffs to the lowest in Malaysia and amongst the lowest in South East Asia. We are also partnering directly affected communities for programmes for positive livelihood opportunities,” Sharbini.

This was echoed at a session led Vice President of Research and Development Dr Chen Shiun while he facilitated a special group discussion on renewable energy and sustainability as well as answering questions from a small energy engaged audience on Sarawak Energy’s mission to provide universal access to energy for Sarawakians, no matter how remote their villages.

Sarawak Energy’s Chief Financial Officer Alexander Chin was a panelist at a special discussion on funding infrastructure.

Sarawak Energy was one of the local partners at the forum which was organised by World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation and hosted by the Sarawak Government and Federal Government.
