Sarawak Energy Awards 99 Scholarships To Students And Employees

RM5million for educational development annually

Kuching, December 7, 2017, Thursday: Sarawak Energy today presented the 2017 Scholarships Awards, and announced an increase in its annual educational allocation to RM8million for next year.

This year, 99 scholarships were awarded by the energy and power utility developer as part of its ongoing efforts to develop Sarawak talent and build up a competent workforce. Of the total number, 85 are bright young Sarawakians who have been accepted to further their studies by various higher learning institutions while the rest are employees who are continuing their education.

Group Chief Executive Officer Sharbini Suhaili, when addressing the scholars, employees and guests at the scholarship presentation ceremony said, “We are giving out these scholarships to deserving students to further their studies because a social investment in education is a good investment in Sarawak’s future.”

“Through this, we aim to ease the path to higher education for bright young students from throughout Sarawak. In fact, we believe in this so much that we are increasing our allocation to RM8 million next year from our current annual allocation of RM5 million,” he continued.

The increase in allocation is a reflection of Sarawak Energy’s commitment towards expanding Sarawak’s pool of competent young talents as potential recruits to fulfil future manpower needs.

Sharbini said the programme was also to enhance Sarawak Energy’s abilities to spot, attract, retain and build up talents for and within the organisation as it worked towards achieving its ambitions.

“To realise our ambition of becoming a regional powerhouse and employer of choice, we need to attract the best talent and to develop our workforce into a high performance Sarawak Energy team who can work together to compete with the best in the region,” said Sharbini.

Besides the scholarship programme, internship placement and Campus Ambassador activities are among some of Sarawak Energy’s initiatives to spot, attract and recruit the best young talent.

Since its introduction in 2014, some 314 students have benefitted from the scholarship programme, with more than 212 still pursuing their studies.

Scholarships are also awarded to employee for competency enhancement and as part of employees’ value proposition, with 14 receiving scholarships today.
