Regulated Release Of Water From Bakun HEP
KUCHING, 12 DECEMBER 2017, TUESDAY: Further to Sarawak Energy's recent advisory in the print media on the controlled release of water from the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) reservoir, residents downstream are assured that this regulated release of water is standard practice undertaken periodically during heavy rainfall.
Since the completion of the dam seven years ago, our subsidiary and HEP operator Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd (SHSB) regulates the water level upstream through this procedure, ensuring that the discharged volume have minimal impact on downstream water flow.
Following the heavy rainfall in the past weeks, SHSB commenced controlled spilling on Tuesday, 12 December 2017 and this is expected to last for an estimated duration of three weeks. Bakun HEP will cease spilling once the water level at the reservoir normalises.
Since the completion of Bakun HEP, it is to be noted that the incidence of flooding downstream has been reduced and the impact mitigated as the dam holds back a large volume of rainwater all year round although downstream rainfall into catchments and tributaries of the Rejang can still result in floods.
