Enviro Ride: Cycling In Conjunction With National Environment Day 2017
KUCHING, 21ST OCTOBER 2017, SATURDAY: Sarawak Energy and the State Department of Environment jointly held a cycling event Enviro Ride today attracting around 300 cyclists in conjunction with the State-level National Environment Day 2017.
Themed “Alam Sekitar Tanggungjawab Bersama”, the event which is aimed at building the commitment towards caring for the environment saw cyclists covering a distance of 30 kilometres around the city area.
Among the objectives of the event includes promoting cycling as an alternative mode of transportation that is environmentally friendly as well as to enhance cooperation between the government and corporate sector towards the common vision of conserving and rehabilitating the environment.
The event was flagged off by Lu Yew Hung (卢友云), Sarawak Energy Group Chief Operating Officer and Mohd Hidzir Bakar, State DOE Director at Menara Sarawak Energy here. Also present were DOE's Deputy Directors Amirul Aripin and Mohamad Zaihan Lek and Mahmood Long, Sarawak Energy Manager for Environment.
In his speech, Lu said Sarawak Energy is glad to be part of the State-level Environment Day 2017 as environmental conservation and management is one of the four pillars under Sarawak Energy’s social investment and community development framework.
“We are committed to sustainable development at all levels of our business as we believe that sustainable development is a shared responsibility requiring long term and continuous commitment. In achieving this, we will continue to work closely with various government agencies, corporations and non-governmental bodies to ensure good management practices on our part.”
Working together with other governmental and non-governmental agencies, Sarawak Energy through its Environment Division has rolled out a series of environmental awareness programmes to enhance environmental citizenship among school children, youth, and the general public and also among its employees.
Some of these programmes include tree planting activities with the school children, youth and villagers at Kampung Masjid at Kuala Baram, Miri in conjunction with World Wetlands Day 2017, Safety, Health and Environment Week campaign which featured talks on the environment by DOE and NREB, Household E-Waste Take Back Programme, Environmental Communication, Education & Public Awareness Programme (CEPA) for School Students from SMK Petra Jaya at Matang Wildlife Centre Green Run and Green Photography competition.
