Copper Theft Causes Bintulu Power Outage

2,500 customers affected

KUCHING, 4 JANUARY 2017, WEDNESDAY: Electricity supply to some 2,500 customers in Bintulu was successfully restored at around 7pm today following a power outage due to copper theft at the UPM 33kV Substation.

A technical team dispatched to investigate the cause of the power outage which occurred around 2pm discovered that the substation had been broken into and several critical equipment had either been stolen or vandalised.

The incident caused tripping at a number of upstream substations affecting several areas including Mile 5 and Sebauh. A police report on the incident has been lodged.

The 11kV switchgear cable box panel forced open and its earthing bar stolen.
