2nd Sarawak Energy Batang Ai Mountain Bike Jamboree On 20th August

Kuching, 12th August, Saturday: Set against the scenic backdrop of Batang Ai Hydroelectric dam, the second edition of Sarawak Energy’s Batang Ai Mountain Bike Jamboree will be held on 20th August, 2017.

The event is set to attract over 200 mountain bike enthusiasts keen to test their skills in maneuvering through the rugged trail which will be flagged off on the dam crest and winds through the surrounding hills before looping back, providing an opportunity to explore the area’s lush natural attractions.

“We are calling for mountain bike enthusiasts to register for this event to challenge themselves as well as to explore the natural beauty surrounding the Batang Ai Hydroelectric dam,” said Aisah Eden, Sarawak Energy Executive Vice President of Corporate Services.

“The jamboree is meant to give cycling enthusiasts and their supporters an opportunity to see for themselves the natural regeneration of the area since the development of Batang Ai HEP over 30 years ago,” she added.

Various events have also been included in the day’s programme for the local community to participate in.

“After the success of last year’s inaugural mountain bike jamboree, we are continuing to work with local agencies and the community as well as a professional organiser to bring this event back to the area for the second year running,“ Aisah said.

“The Sarawak Energy Mountain Biking Jamboree is aligned with the State Government’s aspiration to promote recreational activities and grow eco-tourism opportunities to benefit communities at lakeside areas of hydropower plants,” she explained.

Batang Ai HEP is Sarawak’s first hydroelectric dam. Commissioned in 1985, the HEP was the first major milestone in the State’s journey towards renewable energy generation. The lakeside area surrounding power plant also draws eco-tourists from around the world, attracted by opportunities for cultural tourism, sport-fishing and wild-life sightings. Batang Ai has a stable orangutan population and sightings of the iconic ape species are not uncommon further upstream of the dam.
Organized with Legionaires Ventures Sdn Bhd, this year’s event is divided into Sarawak Closed and Sarawak Energy- Lubok Antu Closed sections. Both sections have categories for Men’s Open, Ladies Open and Men’s Master (for those 40 years and above).

The Men’s Open will cover a distance of approximately 45km while the race route for the Ladies Open and the Men’s Master is about 30km respectively.

Attractive prizes including cash, trophies and medals await the winners in all categories. For more details on the event and registration please visit the event’s Facebook page “Btg Ai MTB Jamboree”.
