Sarawak Energy Wins CSR Excellence Award

The state-owned power utility honoured for its community relations initiatives at prestigious award ceremony

SHAH ALAM, 18 NOVEMBER 2016, FRIDAY: Sarawak Energy’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives were recognised at the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards 2016 here recently.

The energy development corporation won the CSR Excellence Award 2016 for its community relations milestones which have and continue to uplift the lives of the communities across the state in a sustainable manner with priority given to those affected by its projects.  This is Sarawak Energy’s second Sin Chew CSR Excellence Award having won the first in 2014.

Leading the Sarawak Energy delegation to receive the award was Group Chief Executive Officer Sharbini Suhaili. He was accompanied by Planning, Strategy and Corporate Development Executive Vice President Ting Ching Zung, General Manager for Corporate Risk and HSE Marconi Madai, Assistant General Manager for CSR Jiwari Abdullah and Assistant General Manager for Corporate Communication Peing Tajang.

Commenting on the award, Sharbini said Sarawak Energy was appreciative of the recognition as it further validates the corporation’s CSR efforts.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, Sarawak Energy has been active in its CSR efforts working hand in hand with relevant government agencies and like-minded organisations to benefit the Sarawak people  in general focusing on four aspects; education and young people, environmental management and conservation, culture and heritage and community development and entrepreneurship.

“We support Sarawakians throughout the state in education, entrepreneurship, capacity building, culture and heritage preservation, environment management and conservation and corporate charity projects,” he said.

Initiatives include providing skills and technical training for rural youths and job seekers, solar home system and rewiring projects at Batang Ai and staff volunteerism in outreach programmes among others.

Sharbini said that under his stewardship, Sarawak Energy would continue its CSR initiatives especially when it comes to looking into the needs of its project affected communities to render support where necessary.

“The communities which Sarawak Energy works with, particularly in Murum, have greatly benefited from the CSR initiatives. They now have amenities like modern housing, healthcare, clean water and electricity supply which was lacking before.

One of the significant CSR milestones achieved involves the Penan community affected by the construction of the Murum Hydroelectric Plant. Sarawak Energy assisted in setting up two primary schools in both resettlement areas- Tegulang and Metalun- as well as conducted the Murum Penan Literacy Programme specifically tailored to close the literacy gap among the Penan adults. Around 400 adults can now read, write and count. Building on this, the corporation is also contributing to the Bakun Trust Fund to encourage education among the Penan communities of Belaga.

In addition, Sarawak Energy assisted in the state’s resettlement action plan to help obtain MyKads and birth certificates for over 800 Penans in Murum and Baram.

Aside from the CSR Excellence Awards, Sarawak Energy CSR efforts were also given recognition at the Annual Global CSR Summit & Awards where it won the ‘Excellence in Provision of Literacy and Education Award’ in 2015 and 2016.

Started in 2013, the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards is jointly organised by Sin Chew Daily and sinchew.com.my and supported by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia and the Malaysia Entrepreneurs Development Association among others.
