KUCHING, 10^th AUGUST 2016, WEDNESDAY: The Sarawak Energy Badminton tournament is back this year with more than RM20, 000 worth of cash prizes to be won.

The tournament, an initiative of Sarawak Energy's Sports Club, will run for a duration of one week, beginning 19 September at the Sentosa Sports Centre at Jalan Stakan. It comprises five categories: Veteran Men’s Double (45 years and above), Men’s Double, Men’s Double (Invitation Category), Novice Men’s Double and Men’s Double.

The event’s objective is promote a healthy and active lifestyle through organising of sporting events and to provide a platform for badminton enthusiasts to compete in local tournaments.

The main prize is the Sarawak Energy Cup with accompanying cash prizes and medals; Champion - RM8,000, champion trophy and medals; 1st Runner up - RM4,000 and medals; Semi-Finalists - RM2,000; Secondary Pool Champion: RM2,000 for secondary pool champion; Secondary Pool 1^st Runner up - RM1,000; for , Quarter-Finalists - RM500; Consolation Pool Champion - RM500; Consolation Pool 1st Runner Up - RM300.

Participation is open to all Sarawakians, permanent residents of Sarawak and those holding work or study permits in Sarawak. However, the committee had come up with an Invitation Category in the Men’s Double, open to all who are not residents of Sarawak.

The tournament will be played on a group league system with quarter-final, semi-final and the final play-off. Each player is permitted to participate in one tie per match and matches will be played on a 21 points 3 games system.

There is a registration fee of RM300 per team which is not refundable. Payment is either in cash or crossed cheque made payable to Syarikat SESCO Berhad and should be submitted along with the registration form signed by the appointed team manager. Intending participants must also submit copies of their identity cards or permanent resident’s certificates or study/work permits for the committee’s verification purposes. The closing date for registration is by 12noon on Sept 9. After which the draw for the team's placement will be conducted on at 12.30pm on Sept 14 at Level 2, Menara Sarawak Energy.
