NEWS & UPDATES
Media Statement - 24th January 2016
We would like to extend our deepest apologies to our valued customers for the inconvenience caused by yesterday’s blackout, and take the opportunity to thank everybody for their patience. We assure our customers that Sarawak Energy is continuing to take the issue very seriously. Our focus is to enhance reliability of power supply across the state by completing the critical parts of the 500kV Backbone Transmission project in the second quarter of this year, to improve system reliability and avoid the recurrence of major outages such as this. This second Transmission Backbone will ensure that the system is better secured by having four circuits compared to the two circuits of the existing 275kV Transmission lines. In the event a double circuit trip occurs, we will still be able to transmit electricity from our power plants in the northern parts of the state to the southern parts. The circuit trip occurred on the Kemena to Selangau stretch, one of the oldest stretches of the existing 275kV transmission system. The completion of the critical parts of the second Backbone Transmission project will strengthen the system to ensure the remaining stretch up to Kuching becomes more resilient. The actual cause of yesterday's tripping incident is still being investigated. In the meantime, we will ensure that the most vulnerable sections of the current 275kV state grid will continue to be monitored closely by increasing patrols and line checks. We wish to assure our customers that should there be any incidents of power interruption, we will continue to put all our efforts into restoring power within the shortest possible time.
