Sarawak Energy Appoints Lu Yew Hung As MD Of SESCO
KUCHING, 12th May 2015, TUESDAY: Sarawak Energy today announced the appointment of its Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Lu Yew Hung to a new position, as the Managing Director of Syarikat SESCO Berhad.
The announcement was made by the Group CEO, Datuk Torstein Dale Sjotveit in Sarawak Energy’s Executive Management meeting today. This appointment is another important step in the ongoing transformation journey to ensure that the organisation’s structure supports the delivery of the company’s commitments to the people and State Government of Sarawak.
With the appointment, Mr. Lu becomes the executive decision-maker for the operations and day to day issues of Sarawak Energy’s traditional utility, Syarikat SESCO Berhad and Sarawak Energy’s other operational subsidiaries. His responsibilities include Generation (hydro, coal and thermal), Transmission, Distribution, Grid System Operations and Retail.
“With Mr. Lu providing a more focused leadership of the utility business, as Group CEO, I will concentrate on the Groups’ strategic development and our role in supporting the State’s development of SCORE and Sarawak Energy’s regional agenda.
“Mr. Lu who has been with the company for over 35 years is the right person for the job. He has performed strongly in leading our operations team and his leadership reflects his personal integrity and values, his in-depth knowledge of our utility business and his professional competence. The Board and I are confident that Mr. Lu will guide the company towards operational excellence and the continued quality of service to our customers,” said Datuk Torstein in his announcement.
Corresponding to the appointment, the Group CEO of Sarawak Energy, Datuk Torstein has also been appointed to be a member of the Syarikat SESCO Board of Directors to maintain the alignment in the overall operations.
As MD of Syarikat SESCO, Mr. Lu still maintains his role as a member of Sarawak Energy’s Executive Management Committee (EMC), reporting to the Group CEO as well as to the Syarikat SESCO Board.
Consistent with this leadership responsibility, Mr. Lu will also take on a more visible role in internal and external communications on operational matters.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Lu said, “I thank the Group CEO and the board members for their trust and confidence in me. I realise that this is a huge responsibility to shoulder, but with the experienced and capable teams of the Group’s operational subsidiaries, we will strive for continued improvements and excellence in the delivery of our product and services to the people. We have in place, short, medium and long term planning in our operations and we will stand guided by the Board’s direction to constantly provide reliable, affordable energy and quality customer service experience across the state.”
Mr. Lu hails from Sibu, graduated from the University of Dundee, Scotland with a Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1980 and joined SESCO in the same year.
He has served the company in different capacities at various towns in Sarawak, including 4 years in Batang Ai HEP Station and as Regional Manager for Bintulu and Sibu.
Mr. Lu was appointed as General Manager of Distribution Department in 2006 and in 2008 he took over as General Manager of Distribution Asset Management Department before his promotion to Senior Vice President of Distribution in 2011.
In 2013, Mr. Lu was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of Sarawak Energy, responsible for the Operating Departments including Thermal Generation, Hydro Generation, Transmission and Distribution. In 2014, Grid System Operation Department and Operational Excellence and Asset Management Division were added to Operations and in 2015, the Retail Department and the newly created Coal Resources Department were added to his line of responsibility.
Mr. Lu has acquired various Competencies and Authorizations and he was a Class 1 Switching Engineer up to 275 KV before relinquishing his switching duties to assume the various managerial positions. He is a Professional Engineer since 1988 and has served as a Principal Interviewer with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia since 1996.
In 1999, Mr. Lu was conferred with Pingat Perkhidmatan Bakti (P.P.B.) by the Governor of Sarawak for his service to the State.
