Raising HSE Standards in Sarawak Energy

Kuching, 25th June 2013: Sarawak Energy has invested in the resources required to raise the standards of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in its practices.  Speaking at the launching of HSE Week Campaign held at Menara Sarawak Energy today, its Chief Executive Officer, Torstein Dale Sjotveit said, with the injection of new and higher standards of HSE practices and concepts, Sarawak Energy hopes to speed up the development of excellent HSE culture in the company.

In his speech, he touched on the importance of nurturing the HSE culture in day-to-day work and workplaces not only to Sarawak Energy staff and its operation, but also to the contractors.  He stressed on the need to closely monitor the operation of contractors under Sarawak Energy and setting the same standards to avoid injuries and fatalities among the workers due to noncompliance of rules and procedures. 

Torstein also highlighted on four main values relevant to uplift the standards of HSE which are responsibility, accountability, teamwork and being proactive.  He reiterated that HSE awareness must start at an individual level before one could embrace the culture at departmental and organizational levels. 

At the event, Torstein presented HSE Awards for Rural Power Stations, an award aimed at giving recognition to the rural power stations that practise and maintain high standard of up-keeping the stations, despite the challenging circumstances in the remote areas. Receiving the HSE Gold Award 2013 for Rural Power Station was Nanga Ngungun Power Station team, followed by Nanga Entawau Power Station for Silver Award and Nanga Mujong Power Station for Bronze Award.

The event also saw the presentation of Awards for Excellence in HSE Leadership 2013 which went to Andrew Nuga ak Dingun, Station Manager of Sibu Outstation, Encharang ak Ngtingih, Station Manger of Batang Ai Hydro Power Station and Cheling Sapong, Senior Superintendent of Limbang Power Station.

Another highlight of the event was the pledge read by the representative of the HSE team committing to improve the safety, health and environment practices and processes of the team’s operation.  The pledge was then acknowledged and signed by the CEO.

The HSE Week Campaign in Sarawak Energy started on 24th June until 28th June 2013.  This annual event has reached its 4th year under the initiative of Corporate Risk & HSE Department, aimed to raise awareness and to remind the staff on Sarawak Energy’s commitment to occupational health, safety and environment.   

This year’s HSE Week Campaign saw the biggest participation from 17 contingents of HSE personnel from power stations and regional offices for the safety games and also the largest number of exhibitors from in-house and external parties.  With the theme “Raising Standard, Saving Lives, Nurturing Culture”, the campaign also aimed at achieving zero harm to the employees, contractors and other stakeholders in its operations.

Among the activities outlined for the campaign is the Online Public Safety Contest for its customers and programs organized at the Atrium of Menara Sarawak Energy such as exhibitions, safety/technical games, safety and health talks, safe-driving demo, etc.
