Bakun Unit 8 Tripped

Kuching, 26 November 2012 - Sarawak Energy Berhad deeply regrets the inconvenience and disruption caused to our customers who experienced disruption in power supply this morning.

Today, Bakun unit 8 tripped at 10:29AM causing some areas in Kuching, Sibu, Sarikei, Sri Aman, Bintulu and Miri to experience disruption in power supply. However, the affected feeders in these areas were fully restored at about 12.30pm.

According to Sarawak Energy's Grid System Manager, Mr Yong Ying Poh, "As a result of the trip, we are experiencing a shortage in meeting peak power demand of about 60MW. As we are faced with generation capacity shortage, we have initiated 'rotational load shedding' at about 1.30PM today, in order to maintain the balance between demand and available supply. Some customers may be experiencing intermittent power supply."

Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd the company that owns and operates the Bakun facility is still investigating the cause of Bakun unit 8 trip incident.
