What is a Smart Meter?

A Smart Meter is a meter that has advanced metering features for more efficient electricity supply monitoring and meter reading.

The Smart Meter initiative is being introduced as a step forward in achieving quality service excellence in our utility sector at the same time cultivate technologically savvy consumers.

This initiative aligns with the Sarawak Government’s Digital Economy Strategy and Smart City concept to improve the people's quality and standards of living by leveraging on technology.

The Smart Metering System is used in many developed nations and Malaysia is the first in Southeast Asia to implement its usage. Sarawak Energy is progressing the transition from traditional meter to smart metering following its successful pilot project in Kampung Gita, Kuching since 2019.

With a customer base of over 790,000, Sarawak Energy will implement smart metering in phases throughout Sarawak and seeks your cooperation to ensure a successful rollout. The implementation will also see the gradual development of smart connectivity features which will transform customers’ experience.

1.	How do I know if the Smart Meter readings are accurate?	Your Smart Meter is installed by Sarawak Energy and meets all international standards, especially for meter accuracy.
2.	Will my electricity bill increase after installing a Smart Meter?	Your Smart Meter is highly accurate. Any increase (or decrease) in your electricity bill may be due to the inaccuracy of the old meter and/or change in your consumption pattern. Please contact Sarawak Energy if you have further enquiries.
3.	How does the Smart Meter work?	Your Smart Meter transmits the meter reading via a wireless network to Sarawak Energy's backend system. Meter readers are no longer required to go to the customer’s premises to take the reading, and there will be no more estimated readings.
4.	Is the Smart Meter safe?	Yes, the selected wireless network utilised is certified by the Malaysian Communications And Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Smart Meter power utility customers in parts of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as Singapore and locations in developed countries are using the same infrastructure.
5.	Is the Smart Meter network secure?	Yes, Sarawak Energy puts the top priority on cyber security and we ensure that the services provided are secure and follow industry standards.
