BALEH HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT

Sarawak Energy has invested in major projects to significantly improve and strengthen system performance, delivering more reliable electricity supply to its customers. Currently, Sarawak Energy has several plant construction projects underway, advancing the overall network and production of energy for the people.

Introduction

The 1,285MW Baleh Hydroelectric Project (HEP) is a key state infrastructure and hydro-industrialisation development project, set to meet the rising energy demands from energy-intensive industries within Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), supporting Sarawak’s ambition of achieving a high-income and developed status by 2030.

Sarawak Energy’s largest hydropower project to date, it is targeted for completion by fourth quarter 2028 to ensure sufficient renewable hydropower capacity for Sarawak’s development and future growth as well as to meet the region’s need for reliable and renewable energy.

Baleh HEP is a Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) with an elevation of 225m above sea level. It is located on the Baleh River, about 105km upstream from its confluence with the Rejang River in the Kapit Division towards central Borneo.

Following a comprehensive Social and Environment Impact Assessment (SEIA) process and approval, Sarawak Energy received formal approval from the Sarawak Government to proceed with the Baleh Project in 2016.

All of Sarawak Energy’s hydropower dams are designed and constructed following stringent guidelines set by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) to withstand extreme flood events and are also in accordance with guidelines set out by the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol of the International Hydropower Association.
