Achievements and Awards
1. Prime Minister Hibiscus Award (PMHA)
Prime Minister Hibiscus Award (PMHA) is the nation’s most prestigious environmental award for businesses and industries in Malaysia, which recognises outstanding environmental performance and leadership. Bakun HEP’s environmental and conservation efforts were recognised at the national-level Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award (PMHA) 2019/2020 where Bakun HEP received Notable Achievements in Environmental Performance, on their first participation. In the 2021/2022 cycle, Bakun HEP emerged as the overall national-level best performer by winning the Challenge Trophy – also the first Sarawak company to win the challenge. Bakun HEP also received an Excellent Achievement Award in Environmental Performance.
The team was assessed by a panel of PMHA Assessors based on 15 criteria namely, Leadership, Priority & Commitment; Managing Environmental Issues; Training and Communication; Legal and Other Compliances; Environmental Emergencies; Environmental Improvement; Product/Service Communication; Employee Participation; Supply Chain; Environmental Social Responsibility; Environmental Accounting; Life Cycle Assessment; Eco-Design; Eco-Labelling and Carbon Footprint.
2. Sarawak Energy’s Bakun Community Initiatives Awarded at Annual Global CSR & ESG Summit & Awards
Sarawak Energy received Gold and Silver awards for the categories of ‘Empowerment of Women’ and ‘Best Community Programme’ at the 16th Annual Global CSR & ESG Summit and Awards 2024 in Hanoi, Vietnam on 25 April 2024. This award is a testament to our commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) to empower the community.
Sarawak Energy’s emerging leadership in sustainability and community development initiatives received international recognition at the 13th Annual Global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Virtual Summit and Awards 2021.

Sarawak Energy received 2 Gold Awards under the ‘Best Community Programme Award’ category for its Empowering Safe and Resilient Indigenous Communities in Bakun Programme, and Gold under the “Empowerment of Women Award” for Empowering Indigenous Women Communities Programme.
3. International Conference on Dam Safety Management and Engineering – MYCOLD Best Dam Operator Award 2023
Sarawak Energy was announced as the recipient of MYCOLD’s Best Dam Operator Award (Dam Safety Programme Category) for Bakun HEP at the ICDSME2023 Dinner at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 16 March.
Receiving the award on behalf of the company was Group CEO Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili. The award was determined based on international best practices by assessors who are experts in dam safety and operations.
4. MSOSH Award
Sarawak Energy’s efforts to ensure occupational safety and health (OSH) were recognised with Bakun HEP receiving the MSOSH Award – Gold Class 1 for the fifth consecutive time since 2019. The award acknowledges member organisations and companies that have achieved commendable OSH performance and shown marked improvement in their OSH processes through sustainable Safety and Health Management system.
