Earlier today, The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, delivered his winding-up speech at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly.

During his address, among Dato Sri Haji Julaihi's areas of emphasis was sustainable development based on the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) which aims to deliver economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability for Sarawak by the end of the decade.

Dato Sri Haji Julaihi also outlined Sarawak's strategy for power generation and distribution, aiming to reach a capacity of 10GW by 2030 from the current 5,745MW. The current generation mix comprises renewable hydropower and indigenous thermal resources with ongoing projects to expand Sarawak’s renewable energy footprint, including the development of floating solar and cascading power sources.

Sarawak Energy is actively implementing a comprehensive action plan to ensure reliable electricity supply, especially in rural areas. This includes re-evaluating distribution system policies, considering rural residents' evolving lifestyles affecting appliance usage.

He also thanked the Sarawak Government for allocating an additional RM85 million to sustain the ALAF project, easing financial strain on eligible rural homeowners seeking power connections.

Additionally, the Sarawak Government is exploring renewable energy sources and striving for full rural electrification in Sarawak, with plans to export electricity to Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia. Continuous efforts are taken to strengthen rural electrification networks while ensuring Sarawak maintains its position by offering one of the most competitive tariffs in Southeast Asia.
